Learn and Support Life-Saving Skills

Emergency First Aid & Basic Life Support / CPR Training

The Palau Red Cross Society (PRCS) offers a 12-hour Emergency First Aid and Basic Life Support/CPR course designed to teach essential life-saving skills for adults, children, and infants.

These courses are open to the general public and are especially ideal for individuals without a medical background. Participants learn how to respond effectively in emergency situations — whether at home, in the workplace, or during community activities.

Training is conducted by experienced instructors who provide hands-on learning through discussions, demonstrations, and real-life practice scenarios.

As more members of our community become trained, Palau becomes better prepared to respond to emergencies and protect those in need. The nominal training fees collected help sustain the many humanitarian services of the Palau Red Cross Society.

Guiding Principles of First Aid

The course is built around four core principles that define every first aider’s role:

  1. Preserve and save lives

  2. Prevent further harm or complications

  3. Seek immediate medical help

  4. Provide reassurance to the injured or ill

These principles guide every step of the decision-making process in emergencies.

Course Structure & Syllabus

The training combines classroom learning with active, hands-on sessions that prepare participants for real-life emergency response.

You’ll begin with an introduction to the definition and objectives of First Aid and Basic Life Support, understanding the role and responsibilities of a first aider, and recognizing the risks and hazards that may arise during an emergency.

From there, the course progresses through key emergency topics, including:

  • Emergency Action Principles — how to assess a scene and prioritize safety.

  • Common and medical emergencies such as bleeding, fractures, heart attacks, and strokes.

  • Environmental emergencies like heatstroke, hypothermia, and bites or stings.

  • Cardiac and respiratory emergencies for adults, children, and infants.

  • Proper first aid management for cardiac and respiratory events.

  • Safe lifting and moving techniques to prevent further harm to both rescuer and victim.

Each module emphasizes practical application through guided discussions and scenario-based exercises.

Assessment

To ensure full understanding and readiness, participants are continuously assessed throughout the course. Evaluation includes:

  • Participation in group discussions and practice sessions

  • Verbal questioning to confirm comprehension

  • Observation of practical techniques

  • A short written examination

This ensures that all graduates are confident and capable of applying their knowledge in real emergencies.

Certification & Renewal

Upon successful completion, participants receive an official Palau Red Cross First Aid & Basic Life Support/CPR Certification Card.

  • First Aid (FA) Certification – valid for 2 years from the training date.

  • Basic Life Support/CPR (BLS/CPR) Certification – valid for 1 year from the training date.

Refresher courses are available to help participants maintain certification before expiration:

  • BLS/CPR Refresher: 2 hours – $20.00

  • First Aid Refresher: 2 hours – $20.00

Custom-tailored courses are also available for workplaces, schools, and organizations. Duration, content, and cost vary depending on specific group needs.

Courses are available for individuals and groups. Group sessions typically consist of 10 to 20 participants, and rates may be adjusted based on course requirements.

Single-Incident Emergency (SIE) Response Program

If your family has been affected by an unexpected emergency, the Palau Red Cross Society is here to help.

The Palau Red Cross Society (PRCS) affirms its mandate to serve as an auxiliary, humanitarian relief organization dedicated to supporting vulnerable populations. One of the ways PRCS fulfills this role is through the Single-Incident Emergency (SIE) Assistance Program.

This program provides immediate and temporary support to households affected by sudden disasters or emergencies. SIEs, by their nature, occur without warning and can have devastating effects on the livelihood of a family. PRCS is committed to responding promptly to each reported case.

Requests for assistance may be received through walk-ins, phone calls, or referrals. Once a case is reported, the PRCS team conducts an assessment with the head of household to determine eligibility. Based on this assessment, appropriate assistance is provided.

Whenever possible, beneficiaries are also linked to other PRCS programs, external services, or family networks for longer-term support and recovery.

If you or someone you know needs SIE assistance, please contact the Palau Red Cross Society today.
